Spirit of Metal Pattern (金神格)

The Spirit of Metal Pattern (金神格) is a rare and powerful configuration in Bazi, known for bestowing might, authority, and nobility. The "Spirit of Metal" (金神) embodies an intense, unyielding, and austere Metal Qi—often regarded as the "Deity of Ruin." Its nature is fiercely resolute and must be effectively "tempered" (primarily through the transformative power of Fire) to dispel its destructive tendencies and reveal its commanding authority. When properly subdued, this pattern brings great fortune and status. Its core principle is encapsulated in the adage: "When the Spirit of Metal meets Fire, its power commands the frontiers."

Identification

This pattern is determined by the Hour Pillar. If the Day Master is Jia (甲) or Ji (己), and the birth occurs during the Gui You (癸酉), Ji Si (己巳), or Yi Chou (乙丑) hours, the Spirit of Metal Pattern is formed. The success or failure of this pattern hinges entirely on the presence and strength of Fire within the natal chart and during luck cycles.

The specifics are as follows:

  • Three Spirit of Metal Hours: The pattern is strictly defined by these three Hour Pillars:
    • Gui You (癸酉)
    • Ji Si (己巳)
    • Yi Chou (乙丑)
  • Day Master Restriction: Only charts with Jia (甲) or Ji (己) as the Day Master qualify.
  • Favorable: Fire to Subdue: The ideal chart contains strong roots of Bing (丙), Ding (丁), Si (巳), or Wu (午) Fire—especially in the Month Branch—or the major luck cycles must enter the southern, Fire-prosperous regions. Only then does the pattern truly manifest.
  • Unfavorable: Excessive Water: The presence of strong Ren (壬), Gui (癸), Hai (亥), or Zi (子) Water in the natal chart or luck cycles is highly detrimental. Water extinguishes the vital Fire, intensifies the cold and harsh nature of the Spirit of Metal, and is considered the greatest taboo for this pattern.

Pattern Significance

Those born under the Spirit of Metal Pattern (金神格) are typically resolute, decisive, and possess an indomitable will—endowed with a "keen and unyielding talent." At its core, this pattern is a force of formidable, austere energy. If it can be effectively tempered and subdued by Fire, it is akin to raw iron forged in a blazing furnace, ultimately transformed into a sharp and useful tool. In such cases, the individual's hard-edged nature is refined into dignity, decisiveness, and leadership. They often rise to prominence in fields that demand authority and courage, such as the military, law enforcement, judiciary, or oversight roles, wielding significant power.

However, the Spirit of Metal, as the "Deity of Ruin," reveals its destructive side if not tempered by Fire or if luck cycles bring excessive Water. This results in volatility, stubbornness, aggression, and a life marked by dramatic ups and downs—prone to legal troubles, accidents, or even mortal danger.

Favorable and Unfavorable Factors

  • Favorable:

    1. Fire Luck Cycles: This is the most auspicious factor. When major luck cycles enter the southern (Si, Wu, Wei) Fire-prosperous regions, it is said, "The Spirit of Metal enters the land of Fire, and wealth and honor resound throughout the world." During these periods, one can achieve great success, gaining both fame and fortune.
    2. Officer and Warlord (Fire): For Jia (甲) Day Masters, Fire represents Talent (Eating God and Hurting Officer), which subdues the Spirit of Metal acting as Officer and Warlord, forming the noble pattern of "Talent Tames Warlord." For Ji (己) Day Masters, Fire acts as Mentor (Direct Resource), subduing the Spirit of Metal as Talent, while also nourishing the Day Master—also a noble configuration.
    3. Wealth Star: The presence of Wealth Stars in the natal chart or luck cycles is also favorable. Wealth Stars can support Officer and Warlord (for strong Day Masters) and serve as auxiliary forces and sources of achievement within the pattern.
  • Unfavorable:

    1. Water Luck Cycles: This is the greatest taboo for the pattern. When major luck cycles enter the northern (Hai, Zi, Chou) Water regions, Water extinguishes the Fire needed to subdue the Spirit of Metal. Excessive Water causes Metal to sink, bringing immediate disaster. As the classics say, "Calamity beyond words."
    2. Unsubdued Spirit of Metal: If the natal chart lacks strong Fire and the luck cycles do not bring Fire, the Spirit of Metal's destructive nature cannot be restrained. The pattern fails to manifest and instead brings misfortune.
    3. Clashes and Penalties: If the chart contains clashes or penalties, especially those that disrupt the useful (favorable) Fire, it is a sign of a broken pattern.

Classical Sources

From "San Ming Tong Hui" (《

Interpretation: The so-called Spirit of Metal is the "Deity of Ruin," also known as the Warlord (Seven Killings). It only manifests during three specific hours: Gui You (癸酉), Ji Si (己巳), and Yi Chou (乙丑). This pattern is primarily for the six Jia (甲) days; encountering any of these three hours qualifies as the Spirit of Metal Pattern. Among these, Jia Zi (甲子) and Jia Chen (甲辰) days are considered the best. The Month Branch must convey strong Metal Qi (empowering the Spirit of Metal) and the natal chart must form a Fire configuration (to subdue it) for the pattern to be usable. If the chart also contains Warlord (Seven Killings) or Blade (Yang Blade), it is a truly noble chart. If the Month Branch does not convey Metal Qi or fails to form a Fire configuration, the chart should be interpreted as another pattern, such as Earner (Direct Wealth), Executive (Direct Officer), or Mentor (Direct Resource), or as a "following" pattern. Although Water is generally unfavorable, transformation can sometimes mitigate this. However, if there is no transformation and the luck cycles enter Water-prosperous regions, disaster is inevitable.

Another perspective: Those who are formidable rely on strength and dominance. Yet, if their authority is not absolute, others may take advantage. Excessive rigidity leads to inevitable breakage. Without proper tempering, neither severity nor gentleness can be balanced, making it impossible to walk the path of harmony. If one can adjust and tame this nature, achieving balance, then blessings and prosperity will follow. Those who attain this pattern possess keen insight, decisiveness, and an indomitable spirit. If the Four Pillars form a Fire configuration and the luck cycles move into Fire regions, this pattern applies. If born in the months of Hai (亥), Mao (卯), or Wei (未)—Wood months—but luck cycles enter Fire regions, this pattern also applies. If born in Water months or luck cycles enter Water regions, this pattern does not apply. If born in Chen (辰) month and luck cycles move north, it may be interpreted as a Mentor (Direct Resource) pattern. Favorable are Officer and Warlord (Executive and Warlord), as well as Blade (Yang Blade); clashes and penalties are to be avoided. If encountering Gui You (癸酉) hour, since You (酉) is the Executive (Direct Officer) position for Jia (甲), it should not be interpreted as "Spirit of Metal loves Fire to subdue," but rather as the Executive Pattern (正官格). Entering luck cycles that favor Earner (Direct Wealth) and Executive (Direct Officer) brings prosperity. If the Year and Month Pillars repeatedly show Shen (申) and Geng (庚), resulting in "A Ruler's Conflict," it is still interpreted as the Spirit of Metal Pattern. Encountering Fire in luck cycles brings blessings; encountering Water brings disaster. If the chart contains Fire but does not enter Fire luck cycles, it is difficult to achieve success. Favorable is the appearance of Wealth Stars; entering Wealth luck cycles also brings success. For the six Ji (己) days, encountering these three hours is also considered the Spirit of Metal. Entering Metal or Water luck cycles brings immediate disaster. Wealth luck is good, but Fire luck is even better.

"Du Bu" (《独步》) says: "For Jia (甲) Day Masters, the Spirit of Metal especially favors Fire regions; for Ji (己) Day Masters, there is no need for Fire to subdue." It also says: "Six Jia (甲) born in spring, if the Hour Pillar encounters the Spirit of Metal, Water luck brings no success, but strong Fire brings true fame." Another says: "Jia (甲) or Yi (乙) born in Chou (丑) month, with the Hour Pillar carrying the Spirit of Metal and the Month Stem showing Warlord (Seven Killings), results in blindness." The classics state: "When the Spirit of Metal meets Fire, its power commands the frontiers."

"Yao Xiang Fu" (《妖祥赋》) says: "The Spirit of Metal favors Warlord (Seven Killings) and avoids clashes and penalties."

"Yuan Ji Fu" (《元机赋》) says: "The Spirit of Metal is best when subdued."

"Mi Jue" (《秘诀》) says: "The Spirit of Metal favors Fire-prosperous regions; entering the north is inauspicious."

"Xiang Xin Fu" (《相心赋》) says: "The Spirit of Metal is a noble pattern, especially remarkable in Fire regions. It bestows decisiveness and keen insight, without cruelty or deceit."

"Ding Zhen Pian" (《定真篇》) says: "When the Spirit of Metal enters Water luck, the body is split asunder."

Poetry says: "Gui You (癸酉), Ji Si (己巳), and Yi Chou (乙丑)—these three Spirit of Metal hours are to be feared. Meeting Warlord (Seven Killings) and Blade (Yang Blade) in Fire regions brings nobility; in Water regions, one is marred by penalty and disgrace." Another says: "Gui You, Ji Si, and Yi Chou—meeting these in the Hour Pillar is the source of fortune. Those who are arrogant and rely on talent must be subdued; only when meeting Warlord and Blade together is one truly noble." Another: "Those born on six Jia (甲) days are inherently strong; if the Hour Pillar is You (酉), it forms the Spirit of Metal. If it is Si (巳), further subduing is needed; for You (酉) or Chou (丑), deep tempering is unnecessary." Another: "Jia (甲) Day Master seeing the Spirit of Metal in the Hour Pillar, with Warlord and Blade present, is truly noble. In Wood and Fire-prosperous luck, wealth and rank flourish; in Metal and Water luck, the body is harmed." Another: "When the Spirit of Metal meets Fire, nobility is assured; when Metal and Water meet, disaster is certain. Entering Fire luck brings great success; both high office and wealth are attainable." Another: "Meeting the Spirit of Metal in the Hour Pillar brings much nobility; if Blade is also present, it brings balance. Entering Water luck brings poverty and illness; with Fire's subduing, fame and high position are attained." Another: "The Spirit of Metal in the Hour Pillar—Gui You, Ji Si, and Yi Chou are all the same. If the Four Pillars contain much Water, avoid heading north; if the Five Elements favor Fire, head south. Even if Blade is present, misfortune can turn to fortune; even if Warlord is present, hardship can become sweetness. Those who are keen and decisive, upright and principled, will attain office if properly trained and subdued."

For example, the chart of Fang Fengshi, Minister of War: Ren Wu, Yi Si, Jia Chen, Ji Si. Jia (甲) Day Master sees Ji Si (己巳) hour, with the Spirit of Metal in charge. Si (巳) and Wu (午) are pure Fire, subduing it appropriately. Luck cycles through the south, so he passed the imperial exams in youth; in the west (Officer and Warlord luck), his career was hindered; in the north (Water luck), how could he reach the highest rank? (The author speculates) perhaps because the Four Pillars have much Fire and Jia (甲) Wood lacks Mentor (Direct Resource), so entering northern Water luck compensates for this. Zhao Keng, County Magistrate, had a similar chart; entering Xin Hai (辛亥) Water-prosperous luck, he became addicted to wine and women, squandering his fortune. This is because Fang was from Chu (south, Fire region), while Zhao was from Yan (north, Water region)—their regional Five Elemental Qi differed.

Another example: Yuan Dynasty Chancellor Tuotuo: Ren Chen, Ding Wei, Ji Chou, Ji Si. The Spirit of Metal is born in mid-June when Fire is at its peak. Wei (未) contains a Wood vault as Warlord (Seven Killings); the Year Stem reveals Ren (壬) Water; Ding (丁) and Ren (壬) combine to form true Wood, aiding Officer (Executive). The chart also favors Blade (Yang Blade). Luck cycles through the west, with Wu (戊) and Ji (己) Earth subduing Water, and Shen (申) and You (酉) Metal subduing Warlord. Entering Xu (戌) luck opens the Fire vault, so the Spirit of Metal is subdued, and he rose to the highest ministerial rank. Entering Hai (亥) Water luck, in the thirty-seventh year of Wu Chen (戊辰), the Water vault was opened by penalty, the Spirit of Metal was no longer subdued, Wealth Star flourished and gave rise to Officer and Warlord, bringing disaster, and he died by poison.

FAQ

What is the Spirit of Metal Pattern in Bazi

The Spirit of Metal Pattern (金神格) in Bazi is a rare and powerful natal chart configuration associated with might, authority, and nobility. This pattern is defined when the Day Master is Jia (甲) or Ji (己) and the birth occurs during the Gui You (癸酉), Ji Si (己巳), or Yi Chou (乙丑) hours. The Spirit of Metal Pattern represents intense and unyielding Metal Qi, often called the "Deity of Ruin." When properly subdued by Fire, it transforms raw, destructive energy into commanding authority and leadership, making the individual suited for roles requiring courage and decisiveness.

How to identify if a Bazi chart has the Spirit of Metal Pattern

To identify the Spirit of Metal Pattern in a Bazi chart, first check if the Day Master is Jia (甲) or Ji (己). Next, verify that the Hour Pillar is one of the following: Gui You (癸酉), Ji Si (己巳), or Yi Chou (乙丑). Only charts with these specific combinations can form the Spirit of Metal Pattern. Additionally, assess the presence and strength of Fire elements—such as Bing (丙), Ding (丁), Si (巳), or Wu (午)—in the Month Branch or major luck cycles, as strong Fire is essential for the pattern’s success.

Why is Fire important for the Spirit of Metal Pattern

Fire is crucial for the Spirit of Metal Pattern because it tempers and subdues the intense, cold, and destructive nature of Metal Qi. Without sufficient Fire in the Bazi chart or during luck cycles, the pattern’s energy can manifest as volatility, aggression, and instability, often leading to negative outcomes. Strong Fire transforms raw Metal into a refined, powerful force, enabling individuals to harness authority, leadership, and achieve success, especially in fields requiring decisiveness and courage.

What happens if there is too much Water in a Spirit of Metal Pattern chart

Excessive Water in a Spirit of Metal Pattern chart is highly unfavorable. Water extinguishes Fire, which is essential for tempering the destructive tendencies of Metal. When there is too much Ren (壬), Gui (癸), Hai (亥), or Zi (子) Water, the Metal Qi becomes harsher and more volatile. This can result in increased stubbornness, aggression, legal troubles, accidents, or significant life setbacks, preventing the individual from realizing the pattern's positive potential.

Where do people with the Spirit of Metal Pattern excel in their careers

Individuals with the Spirit of Metal Pattern excel in careers that demand authority, decisiveness, and leadership. With the pattern properly tempered by Fire, they thrive in fields such as the military, law enforcement, judiciary, and oversight roles. Their unyielding will, keen talent, and commanding presence make them well-suited for positions that require courage, responsibility, and the ability to make tough decisions, often rising to prominent or influential ranks within their professions.
